Federer’s Outfit for the French Open 2013

Hey all, in true tradition I’m posting Federer’s outfit for the 2013 French Open. I’d have normally posted this much sooner but truth be told I’d forgotten all about it; probably because it’s not what I’d class as a memorable outfit, well it is, just not for the right reasons.

It’s exactly the same style as the crew neck outfit he wore in both Madrid and Rome which I wasn’t a fan of so no surprises I don’t like this one either.

Not really a fan of the colour.

I much prefer polos especially for tournaments as prestigious as a Grand Slam so to see a crew neck is always disappointing, they just look less serious, almost like a practice top which isn’t the vibe I want to see on court.

I’m also not sold on the colour but it’s not the worst. We’re yet to see it on during match play so it might turn out ok.

The trainers have grown on me ever so slightly since Madrid as I don’t think they look too bad against the red clay so that’s probably the saving grace of this one.

What do you guys think? Is it a winner? Or did they make him wear this in exchange for getting a good draw?

About Jonathan

Huge fan of Roger Federer - I'll pretty much try and watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or tweeting about tennis I play regularly myself and use this blog to share my thoughts on Fed and tennis in general.

  1. Oh man, I’m on fire! :D

If I’d have to retranscribe my thoughts when I first saw that outfit, the most accurate would probably be “WTF is this shit?!?!”

Is he playing as Nadal? Might be a good omen for the tournament though :P

  2. The outfit would have been better if it had a collar, it would be more classy for Roger. But at least the wimbledon outfit looks good :D I really liked Roger’s outfit in 2011 but it’s a shame they couldn’t reproduce something as stylish as that outfit. Nevertheless, he always makes his outfits look great because he looks great ;)

  3. Hi Jonathan

Lovely that he got a fabulous draw shame he did not get a fabulous outfit – have they ran out of ideas or is he getting Nadal’s cast offs

  4. Roger just wants to feel young again haha. And with that new haircut, he does look like a new man!

On a more serious note, I hope he can reach the final, but he does need to watch out for Benneteau and Tsonga.

    • Hey Johan,

Benneteau is no good on clay man. Doubt he makes 3rd round to even face Fed.

      Jonathan

      • Really? I don’t follow him so you’d know more about him than I do, Jonathan. But he has caused Federer lots of problem in the past. If he loses early then that’s one less worry! :D

        Johan

  5. Terrible, just terrible. Mind you, I thought this would be infinitely better than Rome/Madrid, but that one turned out ok, so maybe we just need matches to start liking it.

Thinking back, over the years, we haven’t seen that many non-polos. If we look from the start of 2009, Fed has worn polos in almost all tournaments barring:

Indian Wells 2009, Miami 2010, Clay Masters 2010, Miami 2011, Clay Masters 2011, North American Masters 2011, US Open day matches 2011, Miami 2012, North American Masters 2012, Clay Masters+ Roland Garros 2013.

17.5 tournaments out of a possible roughly 75 tournaments. And note that from 2007-2008, no tournaments involved non-polos. Pre 2007, of course, he had a fair few.

    • Good stats! Think he also wore a crew neck USO 2012 day session, light blue.

Has to wear polos though I think in the slams that’s for sure.

      • Haha, yeah, polos for slams, definitely. Personally, I’m not much against the 2011 US Open crew neck. The one he lost to Djokovic in. Red just works so well with Roger :p

But it is true that all his best outfits have been polos. However, maybe the change will inspire him to win Roland Garros, what with reduced weight and everything :p

And you are, of course, right, Jonathan. That brings it to 18 out of 72 from 2009-. That’s actually quite bad, one every 4 tournaments. But if we include 2007-8, it’s 18 out of 107, which is one in six, and add to that the fact that his highest non-polo density comes during the clay season, which spans a long set of tournaments for only one actual outfit, we should look at the number of outfits versus non-polo outfits. And that’s a much better number.

        Cheers,
        John

  6. I honestly would have littlw problem with it if he had worn it for a Master Series event or the others. I think you pretty much hit it on the spot and I can’t agree more that he shouldn’t not wear a polo for the grand slams given their pretigous and his class.

To me with Nike now, its like a trademark now, that Roger wears polo and Rafa wears the crew necks with their huge contrast in styles.

  7. Oh Nike, what on earth were you thinking? Honestly, their motto should be No polo=no good.

Still don’t understand how Roger approved this, he should use his twitter to consult us on matters like these next time. Kinda sucks when FO 2011 was one of the best outfits ever.

I just bought the ‘Roger That’ T-shirt and that even though a practice shirt, is still 10x better than this kit. Oh well still better than anything Murray could ever wear.
Speaking of Murray, heard he was already practicing on grass, first ball hasn’t been struck at the French and he was already thinking about Wimbledon. Don’t think his injury was as extreme in missing a slam. I think he just knew he couldn’t win the French just like Nadal knew he couldn’t win Australia this year.

  8. I’m really digging that Eiffel Tower t-shirt of Federer. Way better than Nike’s cheap ass effort :D But a good draw with that outfit is fine. haha!

    • Think the Eiffel tower one will be Nike too, maybe he should wear it on court? haha

      • Might as well! That looks good, it can attract more french fans i think.

But as long as he wins, the outfit won’t bother me anymore. I have a feeling that he’ll make a good run here up until the quarters. I’m trying to stay positive after that he lost to Nadal in Rome.

      • Yeah, Jonathan that shirt is already in nike.com (GB)

Nike.com in our country sucks :D

  9. What a great solid perfermance by Roger. 1 down 6 to go. Great stats, i think he won all his break points :) cos normally Roger does waste alot chances sometimes. But thats probably me being over critical. Anyway hope this is a good omen for more things to come from the great man himself. Go Rogeeeeeer!!!!!!!

  10. Good match for Roger. The only blip being when he got broken serving for the first set.My countryman Devvarman is next.I hope Roger gives him a good spanking(a bagel would be very nice)or else the local media will rave on about how he gave a good fight.Too bad Hewitt choked away a 2 set lead.A win for Hewitt would have made Roger’s path easier.Just got a feeling that he will face Lorenzi or Kamke in the third round and not Benneteau.

  11. I tried posting on the top 10 Federer outfits article, but for some reason the comments section was closed?

Anyway, thanks for all the outfit articles! Hopefully you can do a top 5 best outfits and top 5 worst outfits since the last top 10 best outfits article you wrote :).
