Federer Targeted by Silly Death Threat

Hey all, I imagine you have all seen the news that some clown posted a death threat for Roger on Baidu.com. I’ve seen a few fans panicking on Twitter about it so I thought I’d do a quick post.

As a brief summary the guy was hiding behind the username ‘Blue Cat Polytheistic Religion Founder 07′ and said “On October 6, I plan to assassinate Federer for the purpose of tennis extermination,” He also posted a photoshopped picture of a decapitated Fed.

I think this is just another typical internet troll who’s taken things way too far and is nothing to worry about. From what I read on mens tennis forums this guys is well known on Sports forums and it’s not the first time he’s posted something like this. This time around though he’s gone a step further and phrased it as though he plans on taking action.

I think the reason it’s kicked off is mainly due to the guy posting it online and it getting picked up in a lot of places. If this was a hand written letter direct to Fed then we wouldn’t have even heard about it.

Even though he’s posted dumb shit before the fact he used the word assasinate this time puts a bit of a different spin things. If the authorities had to react every time a fan said “I want to kill [insert name here]” then this stuff would be in the news on a daily basis but because he used that term and gave a specific date they’ve had to take it seriously and up security, which of course has found its way to the mainstream news and caused a bit of a stir.

To be honest it wouldn’t surprise me if Roger has received a death threats before, being such a public figure it often comes with the territory and it will no doubt be the same for Djokovic, Nadal and Murray. The same happened to Borg at the US Open in 1981 so it’s nothing new. It’s just rarely these topics make the media because it’s something that the sport world and authorities want to keep quiet so it doesn’t get widespread and a.) make people worry or b.) encourage other idiots to start making threats too.

Federer lands in Shanghai as planned

By the looks of it Roger has taken it in his stride and has arrived in Shanghai as planned. I hope what’s happened doesn’t effect his performance on court as that would be pretty annoying. I guess it won’t, we all saw the guy who ran on court in 2009 in the French Open final and tried to put a beret on him and that didn’t shake him mentally so hopefully he’s only thinking about his own game and nothing else when he steps on court.

Anyway, it’s good that the tournament organisers are on the ball and have already upped security just as a precautionary measure. Just a shame for the fans who are in the grounds as Roger’s practices are now private and he won’t be doing any autographs or getting in close proximity to the public. Pity how one guy can ruin it for everyone but there’s no other way round it unfortunately.

As for the guy who made the threat then I also hope they manage to track him down and punish him correctly. (Seems like he covered his tracks fairly well as I thought they already would have) The Chinese way of policing is pretty ruthless so he’ll no doubt get a beating and then some jail time. Which is exactly the way it should be.

About Jonathan

Huge fan of Roger Federer - I'll pretty much try and watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or tweeting about tennis I play regularly myself and use this blog to share my thoughts on Fed and tennis in general.

  1. I’d love to know what the hell he means by ‘tennis extermination’. C’mon man. At least give a good reason!

Maybe he is just upset Li Na isn’t winning any more? Or no Chang has shown up in decades? Maybe he loves ping pong too much? And he wants all tennis serves to be under armed? But, he doesn’t have to exterminate tennis, the ATP muckety-mucks will do it for him. They already are, by introducing the “no let” rule. If you ask them how stupid they can they, they actually go out and prove it.

    • Yeah dumb phrase! Clearly a Nadulltard.

  2. Although a stupid dumb idiot posted that garbage, it’s not a joking manner. Roger will not have his full focus on tennis: who would?!!
If this means skipping Shanghai, so be it! I don’t care if he skips any event, even a Master! His life and his family is far too much to risk! I’m not saying anything will happen but it’s better to be safe than sorry, or dead :X

I feel so bad and sad for Rog! Poor guy!!!

I agree about the guy being an idiot but I disagree Roger should skip it. It will set a precedent and bozos all over the world will resort to death threats. Playing there sends a statement that we are stronger than them. Life goes on!

    • Nah man it’s fine. Like I said in the post I bet he’s had things like this before. Just they don’t come out in the public eye.

He was never going to skip it, not that type of guy.

  3. The internet is now a very accessible soapbox for all. Attention seekers can easily get their five minutes of fame by their videos going ‘viral’ on youtube or tweets going berserk. I agree with you, the Chinese do have harsh ways of dealing with troublemakers and that is what he deserves.

  4. Thanks for the post and keeping us informed.

  5. Thanks Jonathan- I tend to agree, he also posted that sick pic of Fed which has actually been floating around for quite a number of months now. He probably saw and thought of a way to get attention. I am glad it is taken seriously though, and hope they catch the scum bag and really let him have it.

I don’t ever want to see that pic, not even accidentally. The Chinese should send this sick dude over here…we have a special place for him in Cuba. Besides, there’s always a first time and we have a long enough lease to put him away for good.

      • Haha I think they are pretty good at dealing with criminals in China anyway man. Besides you got Abu Hamza to take care of now.

Unbelievable Johanthan! Unbelievable! When I saw that tweet below, “Federer hires Canadian bodyguard”, my first guess was, well, Milos. Then I saw the picture! Ahahahhahahahahahhaa! That…made my day :)

      • Haha I know good picture! Not a Raonic fan really but made me laugh!

    • Yeah I saw that pic a while back too. Just used in a different context now. He’s apologised so who knows if he will be punished. Maybe he needs some community service.

  6. I don’t think that he’s going to do something. Just as Will said, just a scumbag trying to get attention, in my opinion.
But, remember the things happened to Federer in RG ’09 final. Federer was lucky, it was only Jimmy Jump and we all know that he only wants to get attention. The security crew didn’t make any move and waited for Jimmy Jump to touch Fed.
We can say that security is a problem for tennis players, as we all remember Seles getting stabbed. No matter what, Shanghai security team has to take the precautions.
