Federer Rolls Past Karlovic in Miami

Hey all, Miami is underway and Roger rolled his way into the third round defeating Ivo Karlovic 6-4 7-6(4) in 1 hour and 14 minutes.

This will be the briefest of posts because the match was of course dominated by serve and had few rallies. Always hard to assess Fed’s level in these type of encounters but the fact he only dropped 3 points on serve suggests he’s carried on from where he left off in Indian Wells.

Roger has always come out on top against big servers and today was no different as he came up with some sweet passing shots when he needed to and looked imperious on serve.

Quick Match Recap

Federer Backhand vs Karlovic

It was obvious Fed had a gameplan today as he chose to receive when winning the toss which is rare. Karlovic’s serve relies heavily on rhythm so Roger clearly fancied his chances early doors as the Croat has no ground game to speak of if his serve misfires.

Opting to receive paid off dividends as he won 4 straight points which meant the first set was a foregone conclusion. Neither player had another look at a break point and Fed only dropped his first point on serve at 40-0 5-4 up. Nearly the peRFect set.

The second set was uneventful until 4 all when Roger had 2 break point chances but Karlovic served big to hold.

5 all meant a tie break was nigh on unavoidable and another Federer love hold special forced it. The Swiss immediately went up a mini break but handed it back when a forehand clipped the net. Parity didn’t last long for Karlovic though as he slipped behind yet again and this time Roger closed it out from 5-4 with 2 well played points. Game, set, match Federer 6-4 7-6(4).

Thoughts on the Match

Easy Peasy

Easy Peasy

No real analysis or thoughts on this one, just a masterclass from Fed. He knows better than anyone how to play big servers and that showed today. Played smart tennis and as a result didn’t have to get out of second gear.

In fact he never looked like getting broken and I don’t think Karlovic managed to get past 15 on his serve. Return was good too despite only 1 break plus he managed to hit some sweet passing shots which is always good to see.

Stats wise it’s a clinic with winners outnumbering errors by 5:1 and only 3 points dropped behind serve. 6 aces and he took the break point when he needed it. Sweet.

Karlovic will be kicking himself to get broken in his opening service game but it looked like a set plan from Fed to me. The Croatian kept it close on the scoreboard from there after but truth is he never had a chance of winning this one. Maybe he could have pulled off the 2nd set breaker but Roger just closed it out.

I don’t wanna get too excited as Karlovic is hardly top tier opposition so I see this more as a good way to kick off the tournament, work his way in and get back onto the winning path after losing a close one in Indian Wells.

There’s not a whole lot to learn about how he’s enjoying the surface or how he fares in extended rallies just yet but I don’t think that matters a whole lot. Indian Wells was a hectic tournament so it’s definitely better he got this one done quickly and efficiently. Less time on court the better especially with the humidity in Miami.

Predictions vs. De Bakker

Federer De Bakker

Bit of a surprise here as Thiemo De Bakker saw off Verdasco in 3 sets. Looks like another choke job from the Spaniard though as he was 4-1 up in second set yet had to win the tie break to force a decider which he lost 6-2. Beggars belief how weak Verdasco is mentally. Huge talent but just can’t put away any sort of opposition.

No complaints from me though as I think De Bakker is probably the easier opponent for Fed although there’s not much in it. It’s 2-0 in the H2H with their last meeting coming in Rotterdam last year where Fed won in straight sets

De Bakker has nothing to hurt Roger with and really I can’t see how he wins this. He just doesn’t have the credentials to pull off an upset. He might have been a junior Wimbledon champion but he has made zero impact on the tour. No weapons and probably no real confidence that he can win.

Fed in straights. 6-2 6-2.

About Jonathan

Huge fan of Roger Federer - I'll pretty much try and watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or tweeting about tennis I play regularly myself and use this blog to share my thoughts on Fed and tennis in general.

  1. Now THOSE are some serve stats!

    • Yeah crazy solid. Karlovic weak return though, he looked disinterested, not sure why he doesn’t go for it more?

      • Agree, there were times when I wondered if his not going after balls was something he wouldn’t do, or literally couldn’t do. I haven’t seen him much to compare.

  2. I think I lost in the semis here.

  3. Spot on analysis. Nothing to much to draw upon this match as its more a serve competition. Next opponent should be more interesting than today’s snooze match. I nearly fall asleep there.

  4. I’m really enjoying Roger’s aura on court. He is looking comfortable and confident. Just such a different vibe from last year. I like Karlovic, funny guy.
    Can’t believe it…my first win.

  5. Roger served good but his return game was woeful.
The fact Karlovic held so easy except for the first game when he wasn’t yet warmed up
    is not a great sign.

Thankfully De Bakker did Fed a favour and took out Fiasco.
So Fed’s first defeat by Ferrer still looks a great chance to happen this week.

    Screenshot coming.

Are you stupid? Don’t you think Roger didn’t play great return games because he was untouchable on his own serve and didn’t need to expend energy on his opponents serve?

Are you for real? Just trolling around? Who the fuck are you? Where are you from? Vietnam?

      • He’s Pablo’s best friend.

      • maybe he’s responsible for the production of dope for the Spanish trio he’s so fond of.
I’m sure he’s Pablo’s friend or Dull’s uncle or both. To even think that Ferrer has a chance of beating Roger playing at this level is either ignorance or pure hatred or both.

    • Try catching bombs coming down from about 4m high… Man, how ignorant are you. Every time you post something I’m like “meh, I’ve heard all his stupidities, nothing’s gonna surprise me now” and at the end I’m staring at my screen like this o.O wondering how stupid it’s possible for people to be…

    • Guys try not to make comments personal or scathing. What is the point? Just because someone says Fed returned badly? It’s an opinion, you don’t have to like it or agree with it but at least counter it with something meaningful other than asking me to remove someone from the blog.

I disagree with Troy though, he just took it easy and tbh he actually returned quite well, had more chances to break and plenty 30 all moments where Ivo just fired down some big bombs. What else could he do? Straight sets against a guy who took Murray to 5 on grass.

      • Sid TheCookieThief

Jonathan, while I agree that there should be no personal attacks, you’ve also got to account for the history of this guy. Everyone here loves Roger Federer. That’s why we are here. And this Troy guy keeps denigrating Roger, makes caustic comments, and generally tries to rile the fan base. And you don’t expect us to respond us in kind?

He sounds like Pablo all over again. Except, Troy is even more dangerous. Why? Because Pablo is a Spaniard so we can still understand his patriotic fervor. Troy on the other hand is a born, and well rounded troll.

While it is important to have everyone have their opinion, it’s equally important to make sure the blog remains clean of stupid and ignorant comments.

If anyone disagrees with me, please reply, I promise I won’t counter-comment.

      • @Jonathan,
I totally agree with you, plus what is the point of attacking people on their opinion. counter with facts and figure and that would shut him up ;)

      • Sid TheCookieThief

Shamtoot, all of us did a great job of countering Pablo with facts and figures. That went really well didn’t it? ;-)

Besides, in case you missed past comments from Mr Nguyen from Vietnam, I’d encourage you to read them. Once you’ve done that, you tell me, Shamtoot, would you post those kind of comments on a Federer blog?

      • @Sid,
well, that’s what you need to do, nothing else, so god bless you ;)
in regards to Mr Nguyen post in this particular thread, I didn’t see any major thing that would prevent me from posting it in Roger Blog even if I he is not a Fed fan :)
it was just prediction and some opinion on Fed serve, nothing else
unless you are referring to something else!?

  6. Good match, if a little boring :)

  7. Great start, no wasted energy, super serving! Watch the post match interview on the ATP website ( on video menu). Hilarious insight into Feds hair cutting habits!! And last years super short mistake!!! His interviews hv been so entertaining lately! Shows how relaxed he is! Ps well done Sue! I will never be first but I love watching you guys fight it out!

  8. Solid and smart tennis from Fed but sadly poor and dull play from Ivo except occasional big serving. Though I didn’t really mind that the match wasn’t intense so I enjoyed the live chat with totally stress free! It was a great serving day :)

  9. I hope he keeps his hair long. The haircut last year was as bad as the back!

  10. Good match from Fed. Karlovic was absolutely atrocious in his return games (nothing new) so not a surprising result considering that Fed’s serve has greatly improved over the past few months. I expect the Swiss to cruise into the SF.

  11. Very neat stats. This is the Roger we love \(^-^)/

  12. Roger should make it easily to the SF against Djoker. If Roger can beat him again, it is going to be a fine year for Fed.

    • Let’s not get too ahead of ourselves, Karlovic as Jonathan said isn’t a top tier opponent, and I think Dimitrov is in Roger’s quarter too if I’m not mistaken so still a lot of work, Miami isn’t the best conditions for Roger’s style of game but would be great if he could do it.

    • I think Fed can make the semis though, Dimitrov playing ok but he keeps dropping sets left right and centre. I don’t like his OTT celebrations after some of his shots either!

      • Sid TheCookieThief

That’s understandable, Jon. He is still trying to impress Shriekapova. I heard she gives him one Sugarpova candy for every great shot :-)

    • One match at a time! His quarter actually pretty tough what with all the withdrawals elsewhere!! Reckon he will hv another match up with Anderson if he comes thru de Bakker! Not looking any further! Question is can Dimitrov beat Ferrer? On these courts prob not!

      • Sid TheCookieThief

Susie, Roger will pass the Bakker test, barring some extraordinary circumstances, perhaps, wind, flu, stomach virus, blisters, locusts, tsunami etc. And Dimitrov will beat Ferrer.

      • I can see Ferrer winning, Dimitrov only just beat him last year in Stockholm, Miami is super slow.

  13. Short and sweet Jonathan :D just like the match! In other news, hearing reports Delpo is having surgery and will be out for the rest of the season, so sad to hear, so much talent and a nice guy but that nasty wrist always getting in the way. If it’s true I wish him all the best in his recovery, not the career this guy deserved.

    • Oh that is sad news! Very debilitating mentally for Delpo! Hoping for a quicker comeback!!

    • He’s out for the rest of the season?! Shoot! He was one of the guys I enjoyed watching…

    • Is that confirmed now? I heard a rumour he was off to see the Doctor and if surgery was needed it’s 8-12 months. He is a crock unfortunately, shame as he is definitely good for the tour.

      • Not yet confirmed! And now Mayer has withdrawn so Novak has a long break before playing again! Fed second men’s match after Murray so approx 7/7.30 uk time if Muzza starts on time!

      • For Wanda… yep I like yourGravatar . That ppicture is from a famous Japanese anime cartoon. Cool !!!! :)

      • Thanks Katyani and Serajul.

Yes, well done Serajul. It’s Sophie from ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’, a girl being cursed as a 90 year-old. In real life, yeah I’m fractionally younger too ;)

  14. Excellent and clean match, though the score somewhat suggests otherwise. As a whole, I thought that Ivo played as well as he could – serve (with high nasty bounce), volley and hassling at the net with his huge wingspan. To any other lesser player, Ivo could have got a few more points. But Roger had the none of that and passed Ivo time and time again beautifully.
de Bakke also has got a big serve, though unlikely to match Ivo’s. I agree with Jonathan, the 2nd match should be slightly easier, scoreline wise.
    Allez Roger!

  15. Good, clean match from Roger. A bit boring I agree. Witnessed by the fact conversation on the chat went off track a few times :-) He got the job done easily which is what matters, and if anyone thinks he didn’t return as well as he could have at times, well, thank goodness Roger’s intelligent enough not to have wasted his energy when he didn’t need to.

What happened to Stan? I left the match when he had won the first set 6-0, then came back half an hour later to find he’d lost the second set! Looks like he’s in control now, but did he have a dip in form or did Gimeno-Traver play extremely well for a while.

    • Meant to say, I didn’t realise Ivo is 35! I guess he’s not going to improve much from this point on. Amazing really how many oldies there are in the draws these days. I think the era when a 17-year old could win Wimbledon is well and truly gone.

      • Really! the guy looks 50, so I can’t believe you thought he was younger than 35. Wawarinka beat Dr. Ivo in the same fashion in IW and no one said anyone but soon as Federer beats him, “It’s Dr. Ivo is so bad, I thought it was going to be a different match”! Dr Ivo is serve only and Federer has beaten him 11 times.

      • Sid TheCookieThief

Oh and by the way, I was shocked to find out that Dopal is 27. I swear I thought he was 12!

      • KFedFan, I shall pop into Specsavers first thing in the morning :-)

  16. NEWS: Roger to take time off for birth of child. Hmmn…
    1) Dear Mirka, can we delay labor till after Wimbledon :)
    2) Dear fans, I think this is it, its definitely a boy or twin boys or a boy and a girl. Positive though a boy is in the mix.
I’m soo excited for a Roger junior ;)

    • I don’t think he will miss much tennis, Mirka looks big right now, could be April birth.

      • Just remind me, do the rules about not flying once you’re into the 7th month apply on private jets, or only on commercial planes?

      • It’s not a medical rule, but some airlines won’t allow women past a certain point to fly because they don’t want them going into labor on the flight. There are some recommendations to carry a note from your medical provider that states your due date, because rules vary from airline to airline. I found a comment from a flight attendant who said that from a baby safety perspective, provided you’re having a normal pregnancy without complications, it’s okay to fly right up to the end. In her own case she was going to stay on the job until 6 weeks before her due date.
My personal opinion is that they probably have a medical provider traveling with THEM.

  17. Who watched the on court interview Roger had after his win over Karlovic? I missed it. Any link please, heard there was a video tribute to him that was shown

  18. An surprised by Cilic losing but he has played a shed load of tennis since Jan! Jerzys year continues to go from bad to worse! And Isner proving he has staying power!

  19. Hey guys, I have read the comments above and also some of the comments during Livechat about Roger vs Karlovic beeing a bit boring. I have something to say about that…. not quite fair :)
Remember last year? If this match would be against Roger 2013, we would all be saying, lets take it one match at the time, lets not look further than fourth round, lets just hope he wins his first or second round match.
Remember THAT time???? Or have we all forgotten that now Roger is playing incredible well again?
This was a good thing don’t you think so? A match we could all enjoy WITHOUT worrying…. Fedfans never to be pleased… When Roger has injury trouble and confidence trouble, we worry. When he hasn’t got those, we find the match a bit boring or routine??? Not fair :) If it was after any other year, I would agree. But so glad that he played such a match after the year he had. Be glad he won so easily. We and Roger deserve to have some of those too right??
I did chat about other things, but I didn’t find it boring. It was nice for a change, watching a Roger match without worrying for a second, with some lovely Roger points. Thank you for that Roger :)

Please don’t think I am lecturing you guys, but after last year…. this match was a relieve….

I am waiting for Rafa vs Hewitt and tomorrow Roger vs De Bakker :)

    • Yeah! I hope the match with De Bakker is “boring” too b/c Federer played him Rotterdam last year and beat him in straight sets when Federer wasn’t playing well. So just think what a confident Fed would do to him.

    • Sid TheCookieThief

He may be De Bakker, but Roger will be the one dishing out bakery products :-)

    • Totally agree! Enjoying not having a raised heartbeat watching Rog so far this yr, and just admiring the shot making! Long may it continue to be “boring ” this season!!!

      • Comment + 1, Susie :) Yesterday after the matches of Stan and Berdych, there was seriously no match I wanted to watch (because all the big guys were on one side of the draw a day before), so I watched the highlights from Roger vs Karlovic. Not boring at all. Roger made some really great shots and the crowd just when crazy after those shots .

“Long may it continue to be “boring ” this season!!!” Roger that Susie :)

    • Hi Katyani. I did say the match was a bit boring, but that was just a statement of fact because it was. Doesn’t mean I was complaining about it though. Far from it. I’m happy to save the nail-biters for later on in the tournament. I do indeed remember last year (how could we forget!) and how worried I would have been in every round (Delbonis, Brands for goodness sake!). Early round knockouts are a fact for all tennis players, even the top ones, but I’m not sure Roger’s new-found confidence is ready for them yet, so long may he continue to have boring first round matches. I haven’t seen Karlovic play that much but it was also the memory of the last time he played Roger, and how Roger dealt with what was considered a “threat” that left me feeling quite comfortable about this match.

Looks like Rafa steamrolled his way past poor Hewitt last night. Glad I didn’t watch that match!

      • Hey Rita, it was not a lecture or a dig. Hope you all know that :) But there were some comments made about it and maybe it was me, but I did not find it boring. Roger came up with some great shots. Maybe it looked boring because he knew he never was in trouble???
I don’t know. But it was not a complaint Rita. Hope you know that :)

I was up for the match Rafa vs Hewitt. It was to start at 1 o’clock. I think it started like 2 or 2,5 hours later. I went to sleep, but had the laptop on. When I woke up a bit later Rafa was already up 3-0 in the first. So I thought, why bother…. the guy will win this anyway…..

Will your Tiger watch the match too???

      • Yes, Katyani, I know it wasn’t a complaint, but just thought I’d elaborate anyway :-)

I’m afraid Tiger will probably watch with me, yes. He likes to lay across the keyboard, making communication somewhat difficult. :-(

  20. Speaking of Mirka…I saw her before the match. Seven, eight months along? Will Roger miss some of the clay court season?

  21. Yesterday I couldn’t believe Karlovic is 35, today I can’t believe Baghdatis is only 28! He seems to have been around forever and has always looked like an old man to me.

  22. Wow. 6.3 6.3 to Fed in straights. Another one bites the dust. Onwards and upwards. Really happy as long he can keep doing this and more in each rounds. Go Rogeeeeerrrrrr!!!! :)

  23. Great solid match from Roger. Never looked in trouble. Next up is Gasquet. Fed should win in straights easily. Gaschoke has no weapons to hurt Roger. Ferrer/Dimitrov/Nishikori in QF. Should be a Fed/Djoker SF. A win there would go a long way in helping Roger’s already high confidence.
