Federer defeats Tipsarevic at World Tour Finals

Hey everyone, Group B is underway and Roger got off to the peRFect start as he cruised past Janko Tipsarevic 6-3 6-1 in just 69 minutes. It was both the performance I expected and the one I’d hoped for as he really give Tipsy the treatment today, breaking his serve 4 times and only losing 8 points behind his own service. Roger is now 40-7 at the World Tour Finals and moved ahead of Lendl today, another day, another record. GOAT. Also how cool is the Purple polo against the blue courts?

In terms of the match it was total one way traffic, Roger broke first game, was 3-0 up in no time and even though Tipsarevic managed to string together some holds he made no impression in Roger’s serve as Fed wrapped up the set 6-3. The second set was at near JesusFed levels as Roger broke 3 times to serve up a tasty breadstick and I think his place in the semi finals is all but secure. And remember to check out the higlights reel below, there’s some great shots from both guys, including a crazy get at 3-1 deuce on the Tipsarevic serve in the second set.

Key stats were 95% of points won behind his first serve, 24 winners to 16 unforced errors and close to 50% on his break point conversion rate. Perhaps the only let down was Roger only making 51% of his first serves, that could of course be higher; but he didn’t face a break point the entire match. Maybe that says something about Tipsarevic not being the greatest returner in the game but I think Roger’s second serve is very effective on this court. His backhand also holds up well at the o2, the low bounce helps and his slice is always going to be a great weapon.

Purple and Blue = Winning

There’s not much else to say really other than Roger looked in great form, his timing was spot on and the courts are fast with a low bounce; a great scenario if you’re Roger. I said after Basel that he wouldn’t win the World Tour Finals, it’s still going to be tough with Murray looking dangerous now he has the wind in his sails after beating Berdych but I’m much more optimistic after seeing todays dominant performance. Skipping Paris was a great idea.

I’m happy with my level of play today against Janko, who is obviously a good player. I think it’s nice conditions here. I’ve had a good year. It’s true, I feel like I’m striking the ball well after today. I hope it’s a sign for more to come hopefully

Predictions in his next Round Robin

As far as I’m aware Roger plays the winner of the Ferrer Del Potro match, I didn’t know the draws worked like that at the World Tour Finals but everything indicates that’s the case with Djokovic and Murray both winning and now set to face off tomorrow.

Here’s my prediction:

Winning

I think Roger will get the job done against either opponent, he’ll be out for revenge against Del Potro and I just don’t see Ferrer having enough to win on an indoor court.

About Jonathan

Huge fan of Roger Federer - I'll pretty much try and watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or tweeting about tennis I play regularly myself and use this blog to share my thoughts on Fed and tennis in general.

  1. Just saw the highlights (as I wasn’t home to watch earlier today). Great match. And as you said, great form. I was, of course, hoping to see this too, leaves you with a smile on your face afterwards, doesn’t it? :) Some really really great shots in there. Looking fwd to Wednesday!

  2. The WTF court suits Fed’s game so much. His top spin shots accelerate off the court and his slice penetrates very low. The court isn’t fast like Dubai or Bercy, but the top spin goes forward instead of up, and that’s why Roger’s backhand is so amazing at this event, and why nobody can break it down (not even Nadal).

  3. Was lucky enough to go to the match. QUite strange really for a fed fan because you really want Trouncerer to destroy it but at the same time a part of you wants the match to go on a bit. In the end was just happy to see Federer play at/near his best, great match. Unbeleivable how well he moves around the court. hes so speedy!

    • Yeah man I thought that when I was watching it, playing great but such a short match that the fans don’t get ultimate value for money. They got to see Fed though which is always a winner I guess and he came up with some pretty sweet shots. As did Tipsy in places.

  4. After that win, things are definitely looking a whole lot better for the semi-finals. The only thing I’m concerned about is that the first serve percentage was so low for this match. It’ll probably improve as the tournament progresses and he didn’t need it to be any higher but the serve has to be working for him to be effective against Djokovic or Murray. Or Del Potro. Anyway… fingers crossed this level of play continues!! :)

  5. Fed’s second serve is generally amazing on this court, even against Nadal, Djokovic, and Murray. So let’s hope that pattern will continue. Of course, on the other hand, he usually brings his best serving performances against the best players.
