Federer defeats Fish – Advances to Semi Finals with peRFect Record

Not much to say here, this match was really a dead rubber as Roger had qualified for the Semi Finals regardless of the outcome of the match today against Mardy Fish. Still, it was good to get the win and move into the knockout stages with a perfect record.

Roger cruised the first set 6-1 despite dropping his own serve after being a break up. However in the second set Fish hit back after Roger lost concentration and took his foot off the gas. It wasn’t all Roger’s doing though, as Fish was hitting the ball pretty sweet and constructing points well. Roger had a few chances late on in the second set but Fish held his nerve to take it into a decider.

Any thoughts of an upset were quickly quashed when Fed broke early, this gave him some freedom and he comfortably saw out the match to win 6-1 3-6 6-3.

I’m happy I was able to win today just because of momentum for the semis in a couple of days. I’m surprised how well it’s gone always at the [Barclays ATP] World Tour Finals-level for me because these are maybe almost the toughest and most dangerous matches to play during the year because it’s best of three [sets], against fellow Top 10 players indoors, where a few shots usually do decide the outcome of the match.

Verdict

Just a steady performance from Roger here, it must have been hard to remain totally focused knowing the match was nothing more than an exhibition match but I’m glad he’s got past the group stages without any blemishes and it’s definitely good for his confidence and momentums sake.

Despite dropping a set, it was good to see that he was able to up his level in the third. He looked sluggish and lackadaisical in the 2nd set, but in the third Roger moved much better to come through with relative ease.

In the other group, the big surprise was Ferrer beating Djokovic, as I correctly called in my ATP World Tour Finals Prediction post, I thought Ferrer would make the semis here and he’s done just that. Roger will now likely face Djokovic in the semi’s. Should be a good game but I fancy Fed’s chances after how he’s been playing.

About Jonathan

Huge fan of Roger Federer - I'll pretty much try and watch all his matches from Grand Slam level right down to ATP 250. When I'm not watching or tweeting about tennis I play regularly myself and use this blog to share my thoughts on Fed and tennis in general.
